The land to extend the cemetery was purchased in 2011 and groundworks took place in 2018/19 to complete excavation of earth, lawn and road layout. After this work, the land was laid to rest for one year, ready to be soft landscaped from June 2020. You can view frequently asked questions about the project by clicking here (last updated August 2022). Appropriate signage was installed and plots laid out during March 2022 in preparation.
All plots in the cemetery extension are available to reserve.
In the Council Matters meeting of 24th March 2022, it was agreed to allow scattering of ashes in the cemetery, for the first time, on the roundabout in the extension. This is an offer not previously provided in Hadleigh cemetery and will provide a sculpted area of rose and other native ornamental shrubbery with a pathway through for loved ones to be scattered. Pricing for this option in Hadleigh Cemetery was also agreed in the same meeting. It will take some time for the bushes to grow; they were planted in May 2022 as bare roots.
The natural burial area terms and conditions/operating guidelines and seating were approved by Council Matters in their meeting of 27th May 2021 and pricing has been concluded by Council Matters in the meeting on 24th March 2022. The final step for this area to become operational are the installation of hedging and an entrance wooden pergola with a noticeboard for information which have been approved but will not be installed until September/October 2022 when the ground and growth is right for this.
A new memorial structure will be installed in autumn 2022 as approved by Council on 21st July 2022.
Please visit the cemetery page for all the details of the general operations of the cemetery and for pricing.

We can confirm that the Town Council’s public liability insurance covers the cemetery extension.
A cemetery is provided partly as a public service, but in the climate of public spending cuts it is increasingly necessary to ensure that projects are viable. This update acknowledges the sensitivity around cemeteries and burials, but seeks to address only the financial aspects of the project. The Town Council budget included a breakdown of the cemetery which can be viewed here (a budget consists of estimations based on knowledge at the time of compilation, when more information about ongoing maintenance costs and pricing has been decided by the Town Council, further projections may be made): here’s a link to Cemetery Projections RFB4
